Your First Visit

Welcome! We know that visiting a new church can feel intimidating. Here is some information to help you feel at home.

What to Expect

Our services are held primarily in English, with some prayers in Slavonic and Romanian. The atmosphere is reverent and focused on worship. You will see icons (holy images) throughout the church, candles being lit, and incense being used. These are all part of the ancient Christian tradition.

Parking

We do not have a parking lot. Handicapped parking is available at the rear of the church in the alley. Street parking is readily available, and a public parking lot is located one block away at the intersection of Clark and West Conant Streets.

Standing and Sitting

In the Orthodox tradition, the faithful stand for most of the service as a sign of respect and attentiveness to God. However, we have pews along the walls and at the back for the elderly, those with children, or anyone who needs to rest. Please feel free to sit whenever you need to.

Children

Children are very welcome in our church! We believe they should be present for the Divine Liturgy. If your child becomes restless or noisy, you can take them to the back or outside for a moment, but please bring them back. We love having families with us. Please note that restrooms are located in the hall of the adjacent building.

Holy Communion

Orthodox Christians believe that Holy Communion is the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is reserved only for baptized and chrismated members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared themselves through prayer, fasting, and confession. However, everyone is invited to receive the blessed bread (Antidoron) given out at the end of the service.

Dress Code

We ask that visitors dress modestly out of respect for the house of God. For men, this generally means long pants, a collared shirt, and long sleeves. For women, appropriate attire includes a skirt or dress that falls below the knee and a top with sleeves. Women are kindly asked to refrain from wearing makeup and lipstick. Please do not kiss the icons if you have anything on your lips.

We look forward to meeting you! Please join us for coffee and fellowship after the Sunday Liturgy.
